Home About Committee Contact Us Groups Resources Child Protection Conference Forum--> Gallery Privacy --> Hey, I'm Bob B.and I'm your new national coordinator of Sexpression UK. I just thought I'd introduce myself and my team to you. I'm at Birmingham Medical School where I am also one of the local coordinators. Ceilidh is the national vice-coordinator and she is from Newcastle. Alix and Hari are the groups and training girls and are from Nottingham and Birmingham respectively. And then there is Leon, our webmonkey from Sheffield. If you are interested in setting up a new group or need help getting into schools etc then just contact myself or the training girls and we will try and help as much as we can. If you are an estabilshed branch you may think that National committee. http://www.medicworld.co.uk
The website contains group resources from branches - these could help you find a new game for a session or start a new session/project (like the lumps and bumps session that Nottingham do or shagbags that Manchester do). You can also help other branches by sharing your resources and ideas and so passing on your wisdom!! And then there is the brilliant National Conference - which Sheffield is hosting this year. This is always a really good weekend - it gives you a great chance to meet other branches, discuss ideas, get new ideas and have fun! Keep an eye out for more information on your new improved website - www.sexpression.co.uk - as well as checking the website out for resources, there is also more info on Sexpression generally, on the national committee and on the National Conference. On the website there is also a forum - www.sexpression.co.uk/forum - join up to this to chat between groups and exchange ideas.
There is also a Sexpression UK on facebook now (facebook is taking over the world!!!) so try and join it and get your groups to join too. Hopefully see lots of you at National Conference in Sheffield and just give me an email if you need anything or visit Health Care.
READ THIS FIRST! National Ethico-Legal Guidelines for Sexpression by Student and member of Sexpression Birmingham Ethics and the law are areas that often trouble people who are new to the idea of Sexpression. And you are right to be concerned – it is obviously important that we do no harm in the process of trying to do some good sex ed! That said, if you follow some simple rules of good practice, you should be well-protected against any difficult situations. Take some time to read these guidelines and think about how you will implement them with young people. And then, relax! The format of these guidelines is ‘question and answer’ thus enabling quick and easy recognition of the relevance of the guidelines to your role as the peer sex educator. What does the law say about the content of sex education in schools? The 1996 Education Act 1996 stated that “All schools must provide an up-to-date policy that describes the content and organisation of Sex and Relationship Education provided outside the National Curriculum Science Order#. It is the school governors’ responsibility to ensure that the policy is developed and made available to parents for inspection…Secondary schools are required to provide an up-to-date SRE programme which includes (as a minimum) information about sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS”. (Warwickshire Education Authority October 2001) The Learning and Skills Act 2010 requires that SRE must: • include learning about marriage and its importance for family life and raising children; • not expose young people to inappropriate teaching materials; • have regard to the age and the religious and cultural background of the pupils concerned. (Sex and relationship educational guidance is given in the DFEE July 2010 document: DFEE 0116/2010, it is not statutory but is underpinned by the Learning and Skills Act 2010.) All Visitors to the school must work with the school’s sex ed policy to check they are working within it. (It is up to the school to get their governors to agree on the policy). What are ‘inappropriate’ teaching materials? The definition of ‘inappropriate’ is elaborated on in the SRE guidance: “Materials used in schools must be in accordance with the Personal Social Health Education framework and the law. Inappropriate images should not be used nor should explicit material not directly related to explanation. Schools should ensure that pupils are protected from the teaching and materials which are inappropriate, having regard for their age and cultural background of the pupils concerned.
